Dalek: Desperate, Rejected & Angry

March 31, 2007 through April 28, 2007

JONATHAN LEVINE GALLERY
529 West 20th Street, 9E New York, NY 10011 ph:212-243-3822
Open Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 6pm

For Desperate, Rejected & Angry, DALEK formulates shapes found in the natural and mechanical world to create a continuous, abstract narrative. Drawing on wood panel and then painting in a dramatic color scheme, DALEK’s familiar characters form a subtle dialogue juxtaposed with darker backgrounds. For his new works, DALEK achieves a delicate balance of form amidst a hostile, violent and bleeding world. Each painting becomes an excerpt for an ambiguous story, unfolding notions of human survival.

X-acto perfection, Nikki McClure.

Nikki McClure of Olympia, Washington is known for her painstakingly intricate and beautiful paper cut illustrations. Armed with an X-acto knife, she cuts her images from a single sheet of paper and creates a bold language that translates the complex poetry of motherhood, nature, and activism into a simple and endearing picture.

Helvetica. A Documentary Film by Gary Hustwit.

So this may be old news to a lot of you, but it's definitely worthy of a post just in case.

HELVETICA is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.
